FED:Father of fake bomb girl is very relieved
The father of Sydney bomb hoax victim MADELEINE PULVER says today's arrest in the United
States comes as a great relief.
BILL PULVER has told reporters it's been a baffling and frightening experience for
his family, and he's hoping it's now the beginning of the end of their traumatic ordeal.
An FBI SWAT team arrested 50-year-old Australian PAUL "DOUG" PETERS at his ex-wife's
Kentucky home early this morning Sydney time.
He's expected to face kidnapping, break and enter and other offences over the attack
on 18-year-old MADELEINE PULVER at her family's luxury Mosman home nearly two weeks ago.
The HSC student endured a terrifying 10 hours until police managed to detach a device
locked around her neck by a masked intruder - and found it did not contain explosives.
Mr PULVER says the family has been overwhelmed by the love and support they've received
from friends, neighbours, MADDIE's school and the local community.
He says the media too, has generally been professional and respectful, and has only
ever portrayed his daughter as the bright, happy young woman she is, who for reasons they
still don't understand has had her life turned upside down by a dreadful experience.

NSW: Ocean liners to pay historic visit to Sydney tomorrow
SYDNEY, Feb 19 AAP - History will be made tomorrow when the prestigious Queen Mary
2 enters Sydney Harbour.
Too long to berth at Circular Quay and too tall to sail under the Sydney Harbour Bridge,
the Cunard ocean liner is the biggest moving object ever to visit Australia, Cunard president
Carol Marlow said today.
The $1 billion Queen Mary 2 will enter Sydney Harbour at 5.45am (AEDT) tomorrow and
will dock at the Garden Island naval base.
Later in the day, it will be joined by little sister, Queen Elizabeth 2, with the occasion
celebrated with a fireworks display.
It is the first time the two ships have docked in Sydney together since World War II,
Ms Marlow said.
"Tomorrow, we are going to have a slightly more uplifting and celebratory occasion,"
Ms Marlow told reporters on Sydney Harbour.
"These two vessels will be back in Sydney Harbour again and we are absolutely delighted
to be here."
Ms Marlow estimates that the visit of the two ships will inject around $1 billion into
Sydney's economy.
The Queen Mary 2 will leave Sydney to continue her maiden world voyage at 11pm (AEDT)
tomorrow while the Queen Elizabeth 2 will continue on to Brisbane and Cairns.

NSW:Two men recreate aviation history
By Danielle McGrane
SYDNEY, April 19 AAP - Radio failure and aviation fuel supply problems couldn't deter
two men from recreating aviation history.
Eighty-three years after Charles Kingsford Smith became the first man to fly from America
to Australia in a three-engined monoplane, the pair touched down in Sydney.
But Jeremy Rowsell, 40, and Jim Hazelton, 79, said their trip across the Pacific from
San Francisco wasn't always smooth.
"We've had a few little dramas like our radio failing and having to turn back and land
with full fuel tanks," Mr Rowsell said.
"Then (there was) finding that the Middle East crisis has affected the supply of aviation
fuel, forcing us to fly longer legs."
The men left the US on April 4 on a journey from California to Hawaii, Christmas Island
and on to Samoa.
"We repeated as near as we could the Kingsford Smith flight," Mr Rowsell said at Bankstown
Airport, where they arrived about 9am (AEST) in a single-engine aircraft.
"We followed Kingsford-Smith's routes as closely as we could, the only difference being
that he came through Fiji and we came through Norfolk Island...
"He flew in the Southern Cross, which was a three-engine aircraft, but obviously bear
in mind that was back in 1928 and the level of technology was not that advanced so there
was always a threat of engine failure.
"We were in a single engine airplane but we have the benefits of more modern technology."
The pilots made the daring trip in order to raise funds and awareness for the work
carried out by the Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS), which was founded in the same
year the aviation legend arrived in Sydney.
"We've been halfway around the world but we would like to go around the other half,
so we need to regroup and plan because there are challenges in the Middle East at the
moment," Mr Rowsell said.
"But the next trip would be from Sydney out to London, then London out to the US."
Clyde Thomson, Executive Director of the RFDS South Eastern Section, said that the
support of people in the community, like Jim and Jeremy, "helps ensure the continuation
of our services to people in rural and remote areas of Australia".

Fed: Swan says plenty of evidence stimulus working
CANBERRA, April 22 AAP - Treasurer Wayne Swan says Australia is in a better position
than other countries and there is evidence that the government's stimulus packages are
working.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has echoed comments by Reserve Bank of Australia governor
Glenn Stevens made on Tuesday that Australia is in recession.
"The point governor Stevens made yesterday is very important, because we are in a better
position than just about any other developed country in the world," Mr Swan told Sky News.
He also said it was "undeniable" that the economy was better off as a result of the
government's economic stimulus package last December.
Australia had better retail figures, much higher confidence and better conditions in
the housing sector in terms of demand from first home buyers.
"There is ample evidence around that economic stimulus has worked, is working and will
continue to work," he said.

Fed: Bunk bed manufacturer found in contempt of court orders
CANBERRA, Aug 12 AAP - The national consumer watchdog has today vowed to pursue companies
and individuals who do not comply with court orders.
The warning came after a bed supply company and its director were fined $10,000 for
contempt of the Federal Court.
Hercules Iron Pty Ltd and Tom Hatz failed to comply with court orders prohibiting them
supplying bunk beds that did that did not meet mandatory product safety standards.
The need for further litigation could have been avoided if the company had conducted
a product recall after a ruling in February, Australian Competition and Consumer Commission
(ACCC) chairman Graeme Samuel said.
"The company and Mr Hatz were given every opportunity to get it right - this has been
and will continue to be an expensive lesson for the company and Mr Hatz," he said.
"I should also sound a more general note of warning ... the ACCC does not close the
file once orders have been made by the court."
Where there was a breach of court orders the commission would have no hesitation in
swiftly bringing the matter back before court, Mr Samuel said.
"The ACCC regards breaches of court orders very seriously and will be especially vigilant
where the breach of orders involves the supply of products that may cause serious injury
or even death to consumers," he said.

CANBERRA, April 18 AAP - The South Korean born student who went on a murderous rampage

mate says.
Marilyn Duncan said 23-year-old gunman Cho Seung-Hui had written a play called "Robert
Mc Beef" last semester.
"He wrote a play called Robert Mc Beef, that was about shooting friends and a professor,"
Ms Duncan told ABC radio.
"We tried to treat it like any other work of creative writing, you know, we are writing
fiction, that is what we are trying to better ourselves at."
Ms Duncan's friend, John, who had read the play, told her that he took it "as a farce".
Ms Duncan said she sat opposite Seung-Hui during her creative writing class last semester.
She described him as the most closed-off person she had ever seen in her life.
"I never heard his voice except for the first day of class she (the teacher) called
role and his full name was Seung-Hui, but he told her he preferred to go by Sung," Ms
Duncan said.
"I didn't hear him speak for the rest of semester, I saw his lips move occasionally
but I never heard him."
"I don't even remember what his face looked like because his cap was always pulled

Qld: Investigators hopeful of gleaning clues from plane wreckage
By Roberta Mancuso
BRISBANE, Aug 9 AAP - Air crash investigators say they will be able to glean vital
information from the wreckage of a plane that crashed into a home in suburban Brisbane,
despite extensive damage.
Five Air Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) investigators were today picking through the
remains of the Cessna 182 after it plunged into the roof of the home at Darra, in Brisbane's
south-west, shortly before noon yesterday.
The four-seater aircraft then landed upside down in the back yard and burst into flames.
Homeowner Brett McDonald dragged 29-year-old pilot John Haire from the burning cockpit
of the plane only moments after the dramatic crash.
Mr Haire "miraculously" walked away from the inferno, with burns to his arms and legs,
respiratory burns and cuts and bruises to his chest.
He is in an induced coma recovering from his injuries.
Mr McDonald, 41, his wife, 36, and 12-year-old daughter, who suffered a minor head
wound from the falling ceiling, were home at the time.
ATSB investigator-in-charge Mike Cavenagh today said a truck and a crane were expected
to remove the wreckage from the back yard by late today.
The plane's engine would be taken to nearby Archerfield Airport where investigators
would begin pulling it apart and searching for clues, he said.
Fuel samples would also be examined.
"We're looking for anything abnormal or unusual," Mr Cavenagh said.
"Even though the aircraft's been badly burned, there's still a lot of information we
can get out of it by way of whether things were connected or not at the time of impact.
"Some important parts of the plane such as the aircraft (body) and some of the control
surfaces haven't been burnt so we can examine them fairly well and thoroughly."
Shocked neighbours who witnessed the crash said the plane was "spluttering" and bellowing
plumes of white smoke shortly before it crashed.
Mr Cavenagh said it was too early to say what caused the plane to crash, saying that
may not be known for months.
He said about six witnesses had so far been interviewed and investigators hoped to
speak with Mr Haire in the coming weeks. They are also trying to find some amateur video
of the crash.
"All sources of information in something like this are important to us," he said. "We
need as much information as we can get."
Mr McDonald, who was today back at the house helping investigators, said he was keen
to visit Mr Haire once he was out of his coma.
"I'd like to go say g'day and see how he's going and sort of catch up," Mr McDonald said.

WA: Government wants cameras into courts
By Jo Prichard
PERTH, April 3 AAP - West Australian courts could be the first in the country to televise
proceedings on a regular basis.
Attorney General Jim McGinty has proposed a more open court system, which would include
the regular broadcast of opening and closing submissions and judgments.
The state government is building a new court-house complex with improved security measures
after a major prison escape in 2004.
Mr McGinty said today he would like the new Chief Justice, whose appointment was approved
by cabinet today, to be able to take the new court house into the 21st century.
Mr McGinty will reveal the name of the new CJ at a later date.
"It's important that we don't overthrow those traditions but we do make it modern,
efficient and a publicly understandable system," Mr McGinty said.
The Attorney General said the privacy of juries, witnesses and victims of crime needed
to be protected.
He did not want to run the risk of the court system developing into a circus, like
the OJ Simpson case in the United States.
"We still want justice to be done, we also want it to be seen to be done," Mr McGinty said.
"To that end, I don't want to see the courts opened up to sensationalism on a daily basis."
On June 10, 2004, nine prisoners stole cell keys and carjacked two motorists in a mass
escape from the Supreme Court in Perth's central business district.
Four were recaptured within hours, but it took police a further 13 days to track down the rest.
The issue put political pressure on the justice minister Michelle Roberts, who lost
the portfolio to a junior minister after the 2004 state election.

NSW: Video system for jails saves money
SYDNEY, Feb 14 AAP - The state government has saved more than $3 million by sending
prisoners to court by video link, new figures show.
Justice Minister John Hatzistergos said 15,400 inmates had appeared in court through
video conferencing, reducing the need for more than 30,000 transfers.
"This represents an estimated cost saving of more than $3 million a year by avoiding
the need to transport inmates away from correctional centres to appear in court," he said.
Escapes have also dropped.
"The video conferencing system has played a part in reducing the escape rate to its
present record low of 0.3 escapes per 100 inmates, down from two in 1994-1995," Mr Hatzistergos
said.
The system also allows families to stay in contact with prisoners in different parts
of the state.
Mr Hatzistergos said Shine For Kids, a charitable organisation, used the system to
help children have contact with family members.
"Since family video conferencing was introduced in 2003, more than 100 inmates have
used the video link to strengthen relations previously strained by distance or an inmate's
lengthy sentence," he said.
The system is already operational in most major jails, with a further four to follow
at Mid-North Coast Correctional Centre, Dillwynia Women's Centre, the High Risk Management
Unit at Goulburn Correctional centre and a second studio at Parklea Correctional Centre.

Entrepreneur is working to develop his version of branch bank of the future.(BUSINESS)
At a new branch that St. Paul-based AgriBank recently opened in Mankato, farmers can apply for an operating loan, negotiate equipment leases, buy crop insurance or take advantage of the farm credit bank's management consulting services.
They can do all these things and more - check weather and commodity-price updates, make an appointment for help with tax preparation or check on AgriBank's latest product offerings - whether it's noon or 10 p.m.
Here's the unusual part: Thanks to a variety of electronic communications gear, the Mankato branch is staffed by one person just 20 hours a week and takes up only 36 square feet of space in a shopping mall.
That's smaller than one of the tents in which my family and I used to huddle to wait out the rainstorms that inevitably engulfed our camping trips.
All of which means the cost of installing and equipping the location - about $50,000 - was just a fraction of the $1 million or more it would cost to build and staff a conventional, full-service branch. Yet, it gives customers access to key transactions even during non-business hours.
Welcome to Gene Pranger's version of the bank branch of the future. Pranger, 36, is an erstwhile advertising executive who founded Alexander Mackenzie & Pranger, a Minneapolis marketing firm that designs, builds and equips modular satellite locations for the banking industry.
We're not talking just automated teller machines (ATMs) and handy night depositories, mind you. No, the 10 minimally staffed satellites that Pranger has installed since he started the company in 1995 also include some or all of a wide range of communications technology.
There are interactive telephone systems that provide account data and other bank-by-phone services, for example, and interactive video systems that offer product data as well as access to remote, extended-hours customer service centers where a representative appears on-screen to assist with transactions.
Internet access
There's also internet access to an institution's Web page for detailed information on product offerings and rates, not to mention on-site remote tellers who provide the walk-by version of a drive-through teller service and thereby boost productivity beyond the ability of a teller working face-to-face. (The reason, Pranger said: A remote teller can be attending to a second customer while the first one is tied up making endorsements or completing other documents.)
Taken together, these technologies offer "a very economical way" in which an institution can expand its presence, Pranger said.
Pranger does not pretend that his is the definitive strategy for low-cost banking satellites. After all, National City Bank recently announced an intriguing plan to install a series of small, electronics-equipped kiosks in a number of corporate locations occupied by their customers.
Pranger's banking clients, however, are focusing on shopping malls, airports, groceries and other high-traffic retail locations for their satellites, although he said his modular designs also lend themselves to the corporate settings targeted by National City Bank. In fact, he said a California client is discussing the possibility of testing several corporate sites early next year.
Most of the satellites that Pranger has installed from Memphis and New Orleans to St. Louis and Los Angeles are larger than the Mankato location, ranging in size from 400 to 700 square feet and costing $150,000 to $250,000, depending on the electronic equipment involved.
Whatever the size and configuration, however, the result is a comparatively low-cost way to serve customers "at their convenience rather than ours," as AgriBank Vice President Steve Baker put it.
`On their own time'
"We need to go where the customers are - the malls, the supermarkets, the agribusinesses - and serve them on their own time," said Baker, who's in charge of the farm credit bank's marketing, research and development areas. "Given the cost of bricks and mortar, this looks like the best way to do it."
Pranger and Baker are not suggesting that these satellites will replace bank branches altogether: "We'll still need branches for lengthier and more detailed personal interaction, and for customers who prefer the privacy and atmosphere of a conventional branch," Baker said.
Not that Pranger's designs eliminate personal interaction completely - in fact, all of his installations have included service-desk modules where anywhere from one to four part-time or full-time bankers are assigned.
While Pranger did not invent the concept of a satellite banking facility, his modular designs lend themselves ideally to the task of figuring out the best way to approach the concept, said Tina Swanson, a senior vice president at First American National Bank in Nashville, Tenn.
"Everyone's trying to come up with the branch bank of the future," said Swanson, whose company had Pranger install a 400-square-foot prototype at the Memphis airport in March. "But technology and customer needs are changing so rapidly, you need the kind of flexibility that [Pranger's modular designs] offer."
Kept busy
Swanson could not offer objective data on the success of the Memphis satellite, although she said the site has been kept busy not only by travelers, but by airport-based businesses as well.
But the company is satisfied enough with the Memphis site to begin rolling out the concept at other locations, Swanson said, including "at least three more in the next six months." The Memphis unit is staffed by two people and includes an ATM, interactive telephone system, a touch-screen information video system and a secure night depository.
In St. Paul, Baker said AgriBank also is pleased with its Mankato satellite, although that location has been open only a few weeks and no expansion decisions have been made. But Baker is "very optimistic" that Pranger will be given the opportunity to build additional units.
The feedback from his clients has been encouraging enough, in fact, to convince Pranger that his revenues will more than triple in 1998, to about $4.5 million from a projected $1.4 million this year.
The estimate is "a conservative one," he said, based on written or verbal agreements to build 24 units and negotiations under way to build another 30. By yearend 1997, the company will have installed eight satellites.
